I have a user with an XP Pro machine that Desktop Software 6 has started crashing when you try to load it.  The error/exception log is below and I would appreciate any ideas as to where I should look to solve the problem,

Thanks!

Re: Desktop Software crashes

Have you installed the latest windows updates and patches?

If no, then launch Internet Explorer and navigate: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Install all important Windows updates and patches, after that restart the computer.

If it does not help, uninstall BlackBerry Desktop Manager, restart computer, remove manually BlackBerry Desktop Manager directories from Program Files folder. And install BlackBerry Desktop Manager again.

Re: Desktop Software crashes

Machine is fully updated, I have uninstalled, removed all RIM directories and files including the system/hidden ones, rebooted and reinstalled.

Same results.

Re: Desktop Software crashes

Did the Blackberry Desktop Manager work before?

Perhaps it is broken because another application has installed and changed some system dll-s.

Re: Desktop Software crashes

Do you have Rim.Desktop.Services.PolicyManager.dll somewhere?

C:\Program Files (x86)\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Desktop\Modules\Rim.Desktop.Services.PolicyManager.dll

Looks like it's having problems with it.

Did the BB Desktop Manager work before?

What turned it to broken state? Perhaps you installed something on your computer and it changed system dll-s.

Re: Desktop Software crashes

According to the user it worked fine, there have been no new software or applications that have been installed, other than Windows updates. He is only a user on the machine and cannot install stuff.

Now it is possible that it was the older version of desktop manager that worked and it broke with the update to 6.  This user is not the sharpest point in the drawer and to him it just doesn't work, if you understand my meaning.

In any case would not the uninstallation and reinstallation with all of the RIM directories being deleted have dealt with that problem?

Re: Desktop Software crashes

Yes, an update which went wrong may be a cause of the problem.

Reinstall BlackBerry desktop manger via these steps:

1. Uninstall BB Desktop Manager

2. Restart computer (to free system dlls which are in use)

3. Delete manually folder where BB Desktop Manager was installed.

4. Install BB Desktop Manager again.

Hope this helps.

Re: Desktop Software crashes

[ Edited ]

I tried the clean reinstall - including cleaning out the registry of any old bb stuff. Nada. Still getting this on a clean install. BTW - previous versions ran fine - up to whatever was just before 6.0.1 - can't find an older version online to backrev - yet.

EDIT/UPDATE: I blew it all away again and loaded 5.0.1 and it works just fine... I wouldn't recommend an upgrade to the 6.0.1.18 until someone at RIM fixes this. Anybody know where I can find a 6.0 (some release less that .18)?
