I just spent the whole day with this same issue with my Torch.
A nice guy from Singapore Starhub helped me to solve it.
If Swiss Army knife doesnt work there is another Java Option to help:
No matter which option you use, you will have to upload the OS again to your device, so you can get into your device.
Once your device is back on, instead of immediately going to the Email Account set-up, which then just asks for the update, which starts the whole cycle of problems again, do a complete security wipe of your device. Make sure you have backed up first.
on your device: Options - Security - Security Wipe.
Tick all options.
Once the device has wiped everything, rebooted then hopefully this time when you go to update the email account app it will work without problems.
It did for me.
GOOD LUCK - what a waste of a day
