Sequence of what I did :
1. Backed up data on the PC
2. Carried out the WIPE
3. Restored data from PC
4. All email data restored, but emails not functioning
5. Carried out the Service book deleting sequence
6. Received activation messages and emails started functioning
7. Restored email data deleted from the respective email accounts

Well that's quite odd...the data should be there, but somehow is no longer being correlated to the correct email account. Strange. Well, I think what I'd recommend you do is to wipe out the Messages database:
And then restore it again from that earlier backup (use the selective restore method, for only the applicable database, rather than the wholesale "everything" restore method).
Of course, this will wipe out whatever is in the Messages database right now...hopefully there's not too much of importance for you that has arrived in the interim.
