General Failure email error message

I can't send emails from my phone - it receives emails OK and is connected to the internet.  This is random as sometimes they send and sometimes they don't.  It is really starting to impact me - the message I get is "General Failure".  Then you resend and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.   Can anyone help out ?
