Hi and Welcome to the Community!!
There's pretty much no diagnosing those -- they are the equivalent of the random errors in Windows for which tracing the root cause is fruitless. Basically, these are the last out in the programming code -- some event occurred for which there is no handler in the code. The fix is a code update that handles the event...but, again, knowing what the event is is pretty much impossible. So, there are a few things to try:
Sometimes, the code simply becomes corrupt and needs to be refreshed -- just like a reboot:
If it won't boot up cleanly, then you may need to try Safe Mode:
There might be an updated code set from the carrier -- check them via this portal:
The toughest possible cause is a badly behaving app. To find it, there are a couple of options. One is to see if you can read the log file:
Go to the home screen. Hold down the "alt" key and type 'lglg'. (You will not see anything while you type). This will bring up the log file. Scroll down (probably many pages) untill you see a line that says 'uncaught execption'. Click on this line. The name of the app will be in the info. Alternative methods for bringing up the logs are in this KB:
The other method is to remove apps one at a time, waiting a while in between (I usually recommend a week), until the problem ceases...thereby discovering the offending app. Still another method is to reload the BB OS cleanly, leaving some time between adding other apps onto the BB so as to be able to determine exactly which one is the cause.
Good luck and let us know!

Well, I am probably going to have to delete the apps one by one. The other options either didn't work, or didn't lead me to the steps you describe. Don't know why. The "safe mode"? Couldn't get to it. Neither could I do the "alt" key (where is it? on the BB Storm 9550) to have a look at the log. Sooooo.....guess I'll just have to remove one by one - I'm actually going to delete the 5 that just had upgrades. Problem started after upgrading. Will let you know. Thanks.

Nothing is working. I have deleted all apps that I recently upgraded, including BB Protect. Still getting the message, and the App Error 523 Reset, then it resets and starts the whole process over again. I can't use the phone, nothing. I refuse to go to the Verizon store because in the past I have stood around and waited waited waited for someone to eventually help me, only to find out I needed to go back because it wasn't complete. This Blackberry is a bust. I wish I had never purchased it, and will NEVER upgrade in the future. In the meantime, I have a phone that is basically useless. Can you or someone PLEASE help me? I have no "ALT" button that I know of, a "hard" reset isn't working and I can't get to the safe mode (no ALT key) to try. WHAT CAN I DO WITHOUT BUYING A NEW PHONE???

Try the reverse process...
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
Good luck and let us know!

I. HAVE. NO. WORKING. PHONE. NOW. I have tried EVERYTHING suggested - either it doesn't work, or I can't do it (no safe mode, no ALT key....) I have OS 5.0 - I don't know why nothing is working.
How do I load "bare bones" OS??? My application center has been disabled (???) - don't know why that happened. I have deleted all apps - except BB Bridge and Messenger. PLEASE - I am desperate. I don't know of a HELP LINE where I can talk directly with a technician but this phone is my work phone and I cannot make or receive calls. My BB doesn't even recognize it has a phone.

To do the "bare bones" and slow reload process, you may have to do this multiple times...
At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
Good luck and let us know!
