I don't know if you guys read the message above ^--- sent by benatodi on September 7th... it is a link to an article from the public knowledge base:

 

KB33968 "You are attempting to open a secure connection, but the server's certificate chain is not valid." displayed after upgrading to BlackBerry Messenger 7.0.X on the BlackBerry smartphone

 

the article (dated March 2013) explains clearly what the issue is, and how to solve it for good.

This was actually an expired certificate, and once the certificate was renewed the issue subsided.
