You need to provide it with whatever the exact settings are that are required -- and you obtain those settings from your email service provider.
Beyond that, please give us a bit more detail...are you using the Advanced Configuration screens? Are you doing this via the device interface? Via PC/browser? Some other method?
Details please, as well as the exact and complete content of any error messages provided. From what you've said, I don't think that ssl or not is your problem...the actual address of the email server is what it's failing on.
