8820 Version 4.5 (AT&T Service)
My home page consisted of 5 folders where I organized all my programs, plus the applications item at the bottom.
Out of the blue a few days ago, the folders disappeared (along with all the icons for programs that were in the folders) and all that is left is a faint outline of the rectangular shaped backgrounds on the left side of the screen that are stacked on top of each other. And the application item at the bottom also does not have any icons in it to access the programs.
So, now for instance, I cannot find and open my contacts program. But, I know the information is still there because I can use the voice dialing feature to call numbers I don't know.
The only icons I can access to get to programs is through the "toggle" feature (alt and esc). Here I have the PTT, messages, bbmesenger, home, phone, and browser icons which I can access.
I purchased the phone the end of last year and just updated to v 4.5 a few weeks ago.
What suggestions would anyone have of the best process to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.
I thought I was being thorough at the time of the first post, however I missed the boat on that one!
Anyhow, this is what I have done already:
I have done hard restarts with the phone on and with it off (leaving it out for at least 1 min)
I am unable to get to the options menu (neither the "escape key or menu key" on either side of the trackball do anything except toggle the
empty folder areas off and on the screen (except for the items I mentioned above that I still have icons for)
I tried to reinstall the operating system but it just sees the operating system is still there and then tells me to choose options where I can
choose individual items to add or delete. The items I can actually delete or add are bold and the areas I am unable to change are faded
which when I click on them (the faded choices) - nothing happens. So, then I tried to uninstall some of the languages I had on the phone
that I did not need, to see if that would trigger something. It did not. Then, I uninstalled the new folder that came with this software which
contained the "word doc" and "presentation" software. Then after uninstalling, I reinstalled them to see if those folders would appear
again, but they did not. The site I went to to try and uninstall and reinstall the software, was the bb area for At&t.
This more accurately describes what I have tried so far.
How can I get the software uninstalled so I can try and reinstall it, if that is the only way to fix this?

I have not solved the problem yet - but made progress. I have been way overextended since my last post and very tired tonight. I was able to wipe the applications and contents of my phone (after backing up on my pc). This brought me back to an older software version adn teh icons were there again. So, I retored my information and when I did I lost all the icons and it went back to the state it was before I "wiped" it. After a series of attempts I have restored many icons (more than before) but still missing many. At least I got my contacts back. This helped alot. Memo Icon is still missing (which I also really need). Anyhow, this is just a quick post to let you know I am still working on it and value the time you have taken to help. I will update when I can take more time to work on this. I have been limping along in the meantime as it is. Thankfully, I had sync'd all my phone information with my computer at work. So, I can find the information I need there and of course I am not doing any sync'ng until I get this problem fixed. Thanks again. I will get back to this as soon as I can.

The options Icon was not on my phone so I could not change the theme. After a couple attempts using the application loader to wipe and reinstall I have got all my icons back (like the options, memo, calculator, etc. etc. that I was missing).
This time, once I wiped the applications I changed the theme before I restored my back up to the device. The great news is that this worked in that I got all the icons back and verified that the previous data was still there. GREAT!!! My work computer lost all of its information a couple days ago and if this had not worked I would have lost everything permanently. Now I can sync with my work computer and get the information back in there too!
My main page however stayed the same (5 faded areas where the folders used to be on the left side and only the settings at the bottom left works and allows me to access all the icons.
I am not going to try anything else (like change the theme etc.) until after I get back to work and sync this information back into my computer!!!
Thanks for leading me down the right path. I did not know where to start!
