How to update my BB Bold 9700 to 6.0 software ?

My BB Bold 9700 's software is 5.0.0.862.

I'd like to update it to 6.0 but when I try to do it, either on the air or with BB Desktop Software,I get the message "no update available".

How can I do it ?  Isn'it possible ?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

 

Via what you have described, you are using the "automatic" method, which limits you to the OS levels that your specific carrier has released and supports...it's always possible that a different carrier has released the OS level you desire (if indeed it exists at all...I don't know the answer to that question), but you must defeat the automatic process in order to use a different carriers OS package.

The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):

1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below.

2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages

3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed

4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:

  • http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
  • It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.

5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

6a) For changing your installed BB OS level (upgrade or downgrade), you can launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC.

6b) Or, for reloading your currently installed BB OS level as well as for changing it, bypass the Desktop Software and use LOADER.EXE directly, by proceeding to step 2 in this process:

If, during the processes of 6a or 6b, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.

 



If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

Depending on OS version, there can be only 1 Vendor.xml file. Best solution is to use Search and scan C: drive for any files with that name

Hi,

Well, it doesn't work !

BB Device Manager is well updated to 6.0.0.48 but BB Desktop Manager does not propose any update, only several 5.0 packs that were already installed.

Any idea ?

You do not need to download Desktop Software version 6, you need OS for your phone to download and install it on your computer, than Desktop Software will detect new software one you delete Vendor.xml file(s).

From drop-down menu chose your phone (9700) and download latest software for it. Install that on your pc, find and delete any vendor.xml files and than run Desktop Software, connect your phone and follow instructions.

You must choose the advice to follow, for the two who are giving you advice here are not giving the same advice. What the other is telling you sounds like only using the automatic process. What I have given you bypasses the automatic process and gives you control. With the automatic process, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages. Via the process I've given you, you can use any carriers OS package as long as it's for your exact model number.

 

You must choose...from what you have said, you have not followed the process I gave you (the process would have ensured you have the latest Desktop Software, which is not v6, as well as a proper OS Package for your BB, both installed to your PC).

 

You must choose now which method you desire.

You are right, but by reading his post, I assume that he is all new in whole this BB OS update things, that's why I think that it's best to do it my way (easy one, but of course, without much control). Later, if he wants to learn more, he can always do whole thing with wiping OS and choosing one he/she wants.

Of course, also by reading his posts, you will see in his very first post in this thread that the automatic method has already failed, which indicates to me that he already either has the most recent OS that his carrier supports, or that something is not functioning correctly with the automatic process. Hence, trying the automatic process again (as you have recommended) will not I think result in anything different than it already has. Hence, my original recommendation to bypass the automatic process.

 

I also have made no recommendation for any sort of WIPE...I don't know where you are getting that from...

Sorry, I didn't read your post entirely, just swiped my eyes over it (because I know how to do it), i tought that you're giving him method with BBSAK. In my experience, reason why automated update is failing is because BBDesktopSoftware cannot detect new OS (because of vendor.xml).
