Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

It does not work. I have tried the removal of the battery with the unit on, the alt ctrl del and nothing happens. Once I have replaced the battery it strats alone but goes to the lock mode and the screen goes black. It does not start unless I put it again in its cover.

Just faced the same problem, where something went wrong with my "Unlock" key on the top left corner, and I was failing to find a way to unlock the home screen (tried assigning "lock keypad" to another button, but this only allows me to lock, and still fails to unlock ).
You can press the "*" key, followed by the "call" green button ... Luckyly it works

I too am experiencing a problem where the top lock but will ONLY lock the keyboard and not unlock it.
The guy at the AT&T store kept me from having a meltdown by showing me that pressing the * then the green call button unlocked it. I knew about the * key locking the keyboard but missed the second part somehow.
I'm sort of glad the button on the top left quit working though. Several times lately I have "butt-called" someone after somehow pressing the unlock button while the phone was on my belt. I thought that was never supposed to happen when in the holster, but it does. I have three different OEM holsters and the keyboard can be unlocked in each of them.
All is well.
