JVM 545 error and software update

Hi Smiley Happy

2 days ago i got an error on my phone, the  JVM 545 error and i i know it has to do with an outdated software. So took my phone in to vodacom and  got a software update done, but when i got my phone back and put my sim card back in i saw my BIS wasnt working. I then phoned the vodacom call centre and they told me i must register my phone on the BB wirless network again, i tried doing that but under host routing table there was no gprs for me to select. So i took the phone back to vodacom and they told me all my settings has been whipped off my phone and therefore i get register my phone or use it in any way a normal blackberry can be used and i have to get it repaired.

So i was wondering whether a software update after a jvm 545 error could cause all my blackberry settings to be whipped off my phone or is it something vodacom did and therefore should be held liable.

Re: JVM 545 error and software update

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

As a user-to-user community, there is no way we can give you any evaluation of liability. Rather, all we can provide you with is information and opinions...but formal actions and decisions will be solely yours to make.

For reference, here is the official KB on the 545 error:

  • KB12077 "JVM error 545" appears on the BlackBerry smartphone

I do not know why that would matter at all...so, just in case, I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):

1) Register HRT

  • KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
  • Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app

2) Delete and Resend Service Books

  • KB05000Delete the service book for the BlackBerry Internet Service email account from the BlackBerry smartphone
  • If you have no CMIME entry, then skip the deletion
  • KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
  • Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.

3) Batt Pull Reboot

  • With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

Hopefully that will get things going again for you! Beyond that, there is nothing more I can add...but your sole recourse remains with Vodacom, as they are your contractually required formal support channel. They of course have the ability to escalate up to BlackBerry if they need more help.

But, again, there is no way to provide you with any evaluation of liability concerns.

Good luck!
