Re: Length of text message

It's a standard that was adopted to limit bandwidth.  If you are texting someone who has a BlackBerry (in other words, the same type of handset) then you can use BB Messenger.

Re: Length of text message

If you are continually typing more than 160 characters in an SMS, then it may be time to just pick up the phone and call the person.

Or you could type TBC (to be continued) when you get to the cut off, hit Send, and then continue to type a new message.

BTW, here's what 160 characters looks like (to put it into perspective)

12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 1234567890 1234567890123456789012345678901234567890

That's a pretty long message for texting.

Re: Length of text message

Nevertheless, it is a carrier limitation. Most other carriers do not make that limitation to the ONE sms.

Re: Length of text message

I believe the OP is referring to EMS (Enhanced Messging Service) and most Verizon feature phones support EMS.  Verizon definitely does support this as well.  It appears BB does not support this feature - or at least the Storm does not.  I really miss the "Reply with Copy" feature on my Dare and the 160 SMS limitation is a pain!  Here is an excerpt from a Verizon PDF I found explaining EMS:

"Extended Message Length: An EMS capable handset will allow you to compose an Enhanced TXT message longer than the 160-character limit. EMS capable handsets can send and receive messages over 1000 characters long."

Here is a link to this PDF:  http://support.vzw.com/pdf/HowTo_TXTmessaging.pdf

Hope this helps...

Re: Length of text message

omg, have you read this thread? It is a carrier limitation. Verizon limits the feature on the BlackBerry. Verizon does. It is a fact and there is no need to debate it.

I am sitting here my MY 9530 Storm in hand, configured and using on the ATT network (yes, truly) and I have the Enhanced messages service abilibty to compose more than 160 characters per SMS, as you describe.

So it is not the device that limits it.

It is not the RIM network that limits it.

It is a limitation that Verzion places on via the vendor ID coding on the device.

Re: Length of text message

omg, yes I've read this thread but my post was merely an ASSUMPTION (not a definitive statement indicated by my use of the word "appears") that the Storm didn't support it since it works on most feature phones Verizon sells, AND since it makes no sense to me why Verizon would limit it's use on one of it's best phones.

Re: Length of text message
