Probably dirt, dust and lint under the trackball.
Do this... press firmly and move the trackball in the direction in which it does not want to move. This will normally clear any lint.

Thank you for your help. It seems to have solved the problem. I increased the sensitivity from 70 to 90 and it is working perfectly. I then tried 80 but it was sticking a little so I reverted to 90. I hope I don't have to increase it again at a later stage as there is very little room above 90!!
