My PC and Blackberry Desktop Manager do not detect my 8520 phone when connected to my PC. I have tried all the suggestions e.g. remove/replace battery and reinstall desktop software. However when I look under Ports in my Device Manager there are two entries:-
RIM Virtual Serial Port v2(Com3) and
RIM Virtual Serial Port v2 (Com4)
Should there be two entries and could this be the source of my problem?

Well, we should verify that the cable itself is good. Can you try it on another computer? With a bad cable none of it will work.

So it works on another computer? If so, then the issue is with your computer. Has it ever worked on there?
This may help:
What version of windows are you running?

I could connect with my computer until the other day. I got a message received icon on my Blackberry which I could not remove although I had received no messages. I searched the forums and someone suggested holding down two keys simutaneously on my phone (I can't remember now the two keys). This solution worked and the icon disappeared. Now, it may be a coincidence but I haven't been able to connect to my PC since then.

I've now got my PC and Desktop Manager to recognise my phone. It would appear the one of my firewall settings had changed. Sometimes firewalls are more trouble than they are worth !!]]
Thanks to everybody who took the trouble to respond to my query.:
