Problems with Sync with Outlook contacts and calendar (Office 2007)

I have been able to set up my Blackberry curve with email accounts, but sync with Outlook contacts fails. My device will show as connected, but nothing happens. I continue to get a message if I want to use Mass Storage mode on my phone and I assume this should be checked as yes, then I get a folder showing up on my desktop with "Removable Disk (ESmiley Happy, which contains several files. 


When Desktop Manager is opened I get message "Initial Plugin: Verifying Applications" "checking the status of the applications on the device. This is only required on the first connection of the device to a new desktop installation" It shows in the same dialog box "connecting to the device (JVM)...


The connection hangs and nothing happens. I have reinstalled software and was even told by Verizon Support to exchange the phone (which I did), but the same issue of non-connection for sync is still there.


Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
