Receive Message "No device connected" when device is connected

When in desktop media manager software and device is connected to computer, media manager recognizes the device and gives the PIN number on main screen and can synch within, but to view device contents receive message "no device is connected.  Please connect device to view its contents".   The device is connected.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
