Sim free - Blackberry 8520 - no settings

Hi,

My wife has just brought me an 8520 sim free for my birthday,

thought I could just my 02 sim in!

Phoned 02 - totally unhelpful, mumbled on about some sim package

to be purchased by direct debit - then cut me off!

Is there any way I can use a WAP facility, Imonly collect emails

from gmail account, and really dont like give 02 access to my

banking data.

Apparently I dont have photo messaging either, just plain texting

at present. Dont know if orange payg does any better?

Any help greatful received.

Re: Sim free - Blackberry 8520 - no settings

You will need the BlackBerry Data Plan on your mobile provider account.

Whether or not they take your money by direct debit I don't know.

WAP only won't get you RIM's push email or MMS for picture messaging.

I really don't know the answer to that, for O2, without getting charged for the data.

Perhaps an O2 user will see this and comment.

Re: Sim free - Blackberry 8520 - no settings

O2 dont sell the 8520.

They therefore don't officially support it.

To get email, as said you need the BB data plan

O2 offer SIM ONLY plans (simplicity) that have the BB data plan on them.

Yes this would be taken as direct debit because its a contract. (30 days rolling contract).

For WAP, you would need to set it to WAP browser, there isnt a seperate icon.

However you said you have got it working on wi-fi so post back if you need any further help.

Re: Sim free - Blackberry 8520 - no settings

Hi,

Yes got it connected using wifi.

But would really like to get WAP going (even though data would be charged).

I've heard a little about the "simplicity" sims, but am rather confused which

package one look at.

Even the local 02 shop is rather confused on whats what.

Some call them BB - bolts on, others deny such exist!

The 02 online "shop" is about as useful as a wet paper bag!

Perhaps someone knows of the correct package to seek out on

this "simplicity" item?

Thanks for all replies and of course Kudos to you!

Its known as a BB bolt on.

You can pick whichever Sim Only plan best fits your texts and minutes usage.

For example go here:

http://shop.o2.co.uk/sim-only-simplicity

select any plan, and click ADD TO BASKET.

The next page will then show "would you like a Blackberry Bolt on" and give you three options.

The one you need it the Blackberry Unlimited UK.

(its cheaper than pay per use and cheaper than the international one).

On the 3rd and 4th plans in the list (from link), BB bolt on is FREE, but will cost on a lower tariff.

To get WAP working, you would need to go to options - advanced - browser

change the top option to WAP or anything equivilent possibly mention O2

(i.e. t-mobiles WAP browser is T-Zones)

And save.

This would open up the WAP browser everytime you clicked on the browser icon.

But if you then wanted to use wi-fi you would need to change that option back.

Thanks for the info about the bolt-ons - at least thats cleared that up.

Regarding WAP, when I got to:

options > advanced > browser

The following is displayed

1. Default browser configuration: Hotspot Browser  (can be changed to: 02 Active)

2. Default WAP browser configuration: 02 Active (cannot be changed)

Im wondering if the TCP/IP area holds the key to the wap issue.?

Re: Sim free - Blackberry 8520 - no settings

You need to change 1. to O2 Active.

This will then open the browser in WAP mode when clicking the browser icon.

You need to change this back to Hotspot when you want to connect to wi-fi.
