Same problem here, automatically dim backlight is set to off, as it was before the upgrade. I've done battery pull, and it still dims randomly. I've tried selecting the automatically dim backlight to on, then rebooting, and switching it off, then rebooting battery pull etc. Does Blackberry support read these forums, I'm hoping for an auto-generated response telling me to turn off the automatically dim backlight feature.

You can go to Options then Screen/Keyboard and change the "Automatically Dim Backlight" to Off then Save. This immediately increased the backlight to the maximum on my Storm.
Yep, that doesn't affect this situation.
Still no solution that I have found, but it's being investigated!

It's being investigated by who???? RIM? To me this is an easy fix....people all over crackberry are complaining about this. Please RIM, get with Verizon and send out a patch!

Just an update..
I've noticed that when I disable bedside mode on the clock when charging, my screen will NOT dim when flipped to the landscape mode.
I highly suspect that the folks that don't have dimming issues do not use bedside mode.

i too am having the same problem.
it stays bright when my screensaver is up and i'm not using my phone.
but when i am using it, its dim, very very dim.
and i've set the automatic backlight to off just as some of you before me have, even before the 5.0 upgrade.
my Storm was much brighter when using the old version.

Nope. Bedside mode "dim screen" option is set to "no". Autobacklighting off is set to "off". I did notice as did others that this occurs when put into landscape, and brightens when upright. It would be nice if the BB support people could just blame this problem on the consumer. That seems to be typical "support" these days. I've only had the Storm for a week, on a new line of service, and nothing but problems. The appstore keeps disappearing, while the apps I've tried and deleted keep reappearing. Deleting them again assures me that they are merely waiting for a reboot to be deleted, but, a powercycle doesn't do it, they just keep popping back up. But, the Appstore that I really want just dissapears and has to be reinstalled, not from archive but from download. Since the "upgrade" the voice dialing is so quiet you can't hear the name, but the prompt bellows, and it when it finds the phone number, it only actually dials every other time or so. This is my first blackberry and I am beginning to see why so many iphone users are switching over. For me, I've got 3 lines of service out of contract, and this phone within 30 days, about to dump the entire service with verizon and go with att iphone. Really annoying and I can't imagine why so many people are so excited about blackberrys.

I find that it only happens after the battery life goes below approx. 60%. It was happening last night but not after I woke up and it was fully chgarged. Same thing yesterday, It was fine in the AM, then driving me nuts by 3:00. I'm a little supprised it got missed.

Yes, this issue is extremely frustrating. There isn't even an acceptable work around as the "push the power button twice" doesn't work. I've done a full reinstall and wiped my blackberry before doing so and the screen dim issue is still present.
I think this rises to the level of a critical defect. What if there were a public safety issue, or you needed to dial 911 in an emergency. Simply pull the battery and wait for it to reboot??? Unacceptable...
Boooo!!!! With as problematic as these storms have been, I'm ready to chuck it and get an iPhone.
