My device started shutting down a couple of weeks ago with no apparent trigger.
At first, a simple battery pull would be followed by a successful reboot. As time passed, this was no longer sufficient and I had to do a baterry pull while the device was plugged in to a power source, for full reboot.
Any advice/insight would be much appreciated.

I would try a software reload using this guide:
The store can also reload the software for you.
If this doesnt help, you may have to get the device replaced. It could be an issue with the onboard memory, but we should start with possible software issues first.

I will try this out and provide update (all my BB-to-PC stuff is at work so it will be in the new year).
