Stopping the Text Message Alert Once Message Received?

Seems like such a simple thing, but on my previous blackberry devices, when receiving a text message, I simply rolled the track ball or pushed a key and the alert terminated.

On my torch, the message alert does not stop when moving the track pad. It doesn't stop, if I depress the track pad. It will stop if I open the keypad. Is this function user modifiable, or am I doing something incorrectly?

This creates a problem in public or in a meeting, when using an audible alert, as the alert sounds, even after the text message has been viewed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
