Storm 9530 Battery losing charge suddenly

For the past one week or so, my Storm battery is acting weird. The charge suddenly drops by 40-50% in middle of a call or while I am using the phone for some other purpose, say looking at an email. At times when this happens, the phone hard resets on its own.  For example, this morning while I was on a call, the battery charge dropped from 55% to 10% suddenly and my phone turned off. Later on within couple of hours it dropped by 49% after a call of 2 minutes to 12%. At this point, I did a battery pull and when my phone started, the battery log (MeterBerry) shows an increase of 35% when I did not charge it at all.

 

I am well aware of battery conservation measures; I normally keep Bluetooth and GPS off, I don't have battery sucking apps running in background and so on. I have been using this Storm for last 2 years now.

 

My question is, are these symptoms of my battery life is over and I need to replace it or is it some calibration issue and can be resolved.

 

Any help/tips will be highly appreciated.

Hello,

 

There is no "calibration" to be done. The symptoms you describe could be either a battery going bad or a BB going bad. The way to test involves obtaining a known good (as in, you know that it works fine in an identical BB) and fully charged identical battery and using it in yours. Simultaneously, you give your battery to that same "known good" other BB. The results you witness will better identify the root cause -- the battery or your BB.

Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely test the way you recommend. The challenge I have is to find another user with identical BB.

 

In the meantime, I have another observation, that may throw some light on the issue. Yesterday night, as usual the charge dropped to a 2% while I was browsing through BB App World. The phone rebooted and kept showing red battery icon with 2% charge. Offcourse all radio was switched off automatically. I wanted to see how long the phone is going to stay on after this, hence I did not put it on charge. 10 hours have passed since and the phone is still functioning and showing 1% charge. I ran some applications, opened few documents, played a MP3 and a short video, the phone is still running. This makes me believe that the electronics in the battery is incorrectly reporting the status of the charge. I am going to wait till my battery drains completely before I recharge it and see if that helps. Will keep everyone posted.

Actually, with this battery technology, fully draining is not a healthy thing. Then again, with the way yours is acting, I suppose it cannot hurt.

Cycling the battery did not work. Looks like the battery life is over. I replaced a new battery and my phone is behaving normally; discharging 2-3% / hour as expected.

 

Hence if anyone is experiencing symptoms as above, please replace your battery.

also look for battery swelling an easy way to detect a faulty battery.

^^ True, Smiley Happy My battery did have little bulge on one side in the middle.

blackberry storm 9530 , really really poor battery life , its jus not withstanding for even 3 to 4 hours , its brand new mobile , upset with blackberry's battery . need a solution.
