Suddenly stopped communicating

After years of reasonably trouble free synchronising my Curve 9300 with Microsoft Outlook, my desktop software has for no obvious reason decided to stop communicating with my phone. On connecting, it comes up with the message - "BlackBerry Desktop Software cannot communicate with the connected device". The USB connection must be ok as I can still access all files on my computer. Any clues as to how to fix?
