Sync problem - connector specific error

Suddenly I get the following message when I try to sync my Curve to my Windows 7 PC.  'Connector Specific Error'.

 

Maybe this means the wire has died, but, if so, how would it connect?

I actually reloaded my current version (6)   but the principle was the same. Thanks.
