this is just a guess but if its anything like a computer battery then over charging or leaving on charge all night will shorten the battery life.
would of thought it would have lasted more than 3 weeks though.

Could it be that you have many apps running at the same time? That still seems like a short time between charges but if you have 50 apps that all want some of the battery's juice, you'll run into problems. As for charging it, charging it frequently or overnight will not shorten the battery life. With BlackBerry L-ion batterries, you can charge anywhere, anytime, as long and as often as you wish and you'll be fine.
By the way, to find out which apps are runnning, press and hold the menu button (the BB button to the left of the trackpad). All running apps will be displayed. You can then selectively turn off any apps that aren't required at that time.

As MrDJ stated, screen brightness is a consideration. Check out this article, which is a sticky at the top of the 9800 Support Forum page:

A HUGE drain on my Torch was having the Geolocation (GPS) turned on - which it is by default. And some mapping applications or anything that requires location services to be used will turn it on. Turn it off unless you need it.

RockyRowlands, to turn off the apps that don't need to be running, go to the app and open it, press the menu button and select Close. DO NOT go to the app and simply press the red phone button to close it. This removes it from your screen but leaves it running in the background. Please note that some apps will not close despite you manually close them i.e. phone, browser, etc.
