The next thing I would do then is to make a backup of the data using the Desktop Manager's backup and restore feature. Then I'd either wipe the device or reload the software.
If you want to try wiping the device you would go to Options | Security Options | General Settings, hit the menu button, choose Wipe Handheld. Doing so would erase all the data, but also reset the device back to factory specs. After it's done wiping try going into the compose sms and see if it happens. If not, you can use the backup and restore to restore your data and try it once more
