Re: Thunderbird and BB 8700

Thunderbird is not a supported organizer.

Below is a list of the supported organizers for Desktop Manager v4.3:

Organizer Support
  • Lotus Notes® 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 8.0
  • MS Outlook® 2002, 2003, 2007
  • MS Outlook Express 6, Windows Contacts (Vista Address Book)
  • Novell® GroupWise® 6.5, 7.0
  • Yahoo!® PIM

I have found a way to do a Sync between my Blackberry Calendar and Thunderbird (w/ Lightning), though it is slightly complicated. It involves using Google Calendar as the median to sync the two. Here's what I did to make it work:

Run Thunderbird:

Open your preferred Internet Browser and:

-Go to http://Calendar.Google.com and Login (Or create a free account if you do not already have one)

  • Click on Setting in the Upper Right hand corner
  • Click on the "Calendars" Tab under Calendar Settings
  • Click on the Calendar (it will probably be labeled as your name)
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page
  • Click on the Orange "XML" button next to "Private Address:"
  • Right Click the link that pops up on the screen and select Copy (or just manually highlight it and copy it)

Go back into Thunderbird, Click on "Calendar" in the lower left hand corner

  • Click on the "Calendar" Menu and then click "New Calendar"
  • Select "On the Network" and then click "Next"
  • By "Format" Select: "Google Calendar"
  • Paste the Link that you copied from Google Calendar
  • Click "Next" then enter in your Gmail Address as the "User Name" and then enter your password
  • If you feel comfortable doing so, click on "Use Password Manager to remember this password"
  • Click OK
  • Select a Name for the Calendar and enter it into the box and select a color for it and click "Next"
  • Now Click "Finish"; Your Calendar should now show in Thunderbird

Sync your (Google) Calendar in Thunderbird with your Blackberry:

  • On your Blackberry, open the web browser then go to: http://m.google.com
  • Download and install "Google Sync"
  • Run the Program and Sign In
  • Follow any prompts
  • When finished your calendars will automatically Sync!

I have done this and have had not problems at all... and the great thing is that if you are away from your computer and use one somewhere else, you can always add events and appointments via Calendar.google.com!

Hope this helps out others as it has worked great for me!

two comments :
  • this is a walkthrough on how to do Thunderbird<->Google Calendar sync and Google Calendar <-> Blackberry sync . It works but it's not a real Thunderbird <-> Blackberry sync.
  • this works for Events only. You can do about the same with Google Mail provided you have a gmail account. You can't do the same for contacts (yet).
  • As far as I know, you can create an Event from your Blackberry, and it will eventually sync to youy GCal, thus being displayed in Thunderbird. That way, you really have three ways of adding an event.

Re: Thunderbird and BB 8700

Ok, after a bit more digging, I have found an even better way to sync your calendar AND contacts from your Blackberry to Thunderbird (again, this works using third party software/sync servers but it seems pretty reliable thus far).

Open your Browser and go to:

  • http://my.funambol.com and Register [Note: I use US Cellular and they aren’t in the list of providers, even though it is a fairly thorough list, so I just selected Verizon as my service provider and it still worked!]
  • Once you are registered and logged in, Click on the Download Tab

On your Blackberry:

  • Once you have the program installed, run it and insert your user name and password (when you run the program, if it doesn’t run you through setup automatically, then open the menu and select settings)
  • Go ahead and Sync your Phone with Funambol

Back to your Browser:

Open Thunderbird:

  • Install the Add-on
  • After install and restart, click on the “Tools” menu, then click on “Funambol Plug-in”
  • Click on “Options” in the window that pops up and then enter your User Name and Password
  • Click “Ok” and then “Click to Synchronize”

I hope that this is more useful than the Google Sync Option for everyone who is interested in Syncing with Thunderbird. A few things to remember: in the Settings on the Program for your Blackberry, you can select how often that a sync is performed; it looks like you have to manually sync with the Plug-in in Thunderbird, (but in my opinion it’s easy enough to); Funambol also has an email client for Blackberry (it will probably have you download it) that displays HTML messages significantly better than the proprietary client on the phone.

Re: Thunderbird and BB 8700

Hi Folks,

I don't use neither Lotus Notes, MS Outloo, MS Outlook Express, nor Yahoo.

I'm working with Mozilla Firefox to write my eMails.

Is there a way to sync my BB with Firefox?

Any Ideas about?

gHello,

we need more info regarding your personal life !

So you say you're using Firefox to write emails. It means you are going to a website that hosts all your emails. What is that website ? I have understood that it is not Yahoo!Mail . Is it GMail ? Hotmail ? GMX ? AOL ? I am asking because you can sync up your webmail emails only if your mail provider allows you to pop or imap your mails.

Re: Thunderbird and BB 8700

Hi gHello!

Thanks for your fast reply,

Yes I'm using gmx to host my mails. At gmx there is a pop3 available.

The Reason for my question is following. Several month ago my old palm broke down and I bought a BB now.

With the Palm pc I was able to edit calendar and contact details in the desktop software from palm, where calendar and conact mamagement was included.

Right now I'm searching something like the calendar and contact management in the BB desktop software.

Rgds.
