Trackball freezes

My Curve 8310's trackball works fine for about two minutes after startup. After that, it will not respond in any manner. When I press the alt and shift keys, they respond, leading me to believe it's just the trackball. I have wiped the handset twice and installed a new trackball, but these haven't helped. Your expertise is appreciated.
