4/13/2010: The process that joeyyy outlined has worked for me (at least thru step 5). I will now try to back up. If it stops working again, I will add to this message. My 8520 just started the trackpad issue today after getting it 2/5/2010. AT&T support will just lead you thru a bunch of wasted steps.
Well, it's 2 days later and I'm having the same problem. The trackpad works until I actually start using the phone and navigating different programs, then it freezes. I called AT&T and explained all the troubleshooting things that I did, and they couldn't offer any other solution, so they are sending another phone (reconditioned). I'm guessing that with the experiences that others have had here, that I will have the problem again.
It's interesting that the tech support said there is no "known" issue in their system that lists the trackpad as a problem, yet that person also said he's received a lot of calls about it. Hmmmm.

So for the past few days my trackpad has been buzzing out on me. It would not work then I would let it alone for a few minutes and it would work back up. I found out that by cleaning the trackpad and its connections to the phone, then it works fine. I just cleaned it up an hour ago and I have had no trackpad problems so I am guessing this is the way it works.
I'll fix anybody's blackberry trackpad for free if you guys want.
Just pay for the shipping & handling. If anyone's interested just let me know.
No, I'm not trying to scam you...I just know how frustrating it is when the phone you love is freezing up!

My trackpad is completely dead; it stopped working yesterday after the BB froze for a couple of seconds. It will not work at all. I'm surprised this is a common problem. I tried an update (did it automatically through the DM) and it's still dead. I'm not going to try a factory reset as I know this won't help.

Did you read my post before?
So I took out the trackpad cleaned it and re-connected to the main circuit board and so far it only freezes up on me once or twice in a day. No more than that.

i face the same issue regarding trackpad.
upgraded my 8520 to os5 and the trackpad would only work correctly when there was some sort of fabric in between my finger and the pad.
what is strange is i installed the exact same OS on my moms 8520 and hers works fine.
when using mine with 4.6 it works seemlessly.... need help on this!

WOW- So glad I'm not the only one, but when I called T-Mobile, they acted like it was such a surprise to hear a trackpad wasn't working... I'm waiting for my THIRD... yes 3RD replacement BB 8520- I went ahead and just bought another phone and am selling the BB. I can't deal with it anymore. I use it for business and personal mail, contacts, fun, etc.... new phone, hopefully fewer problems. Warranties rock though.

Well I'm having the same problem on my 9700. I've rebooted it more than 20+ times but it keeps coming back. I mean it works after I reboot but in the next few days the problem is back and I think it's purely the software. I've had the phone for only 5 months not even full 5 months! RIM you better fix it now and fix it fast before we all move on to something else.

I faced the same issue and fixed it by pressing hard the metal area under the sim card. For this you'll have to remove the SIM card and press the metal that one of the videos showed to be unscrewed. I had dropped my phone a couple of times and I think there was some lose connectivity.
