You may have to open and replace the trackpad.. If it does not work then the chip that controls that data needs to be reflowed or replaced by a technician.
There are several ways your trackpad will stop working;
2. Phone flexing.. What's this? People having there phone in there pockets constantly applying pressure and bending the phone.
3. Incorrect firmware flashing
4. System connector has cold solder
5. Micro chip that controls the trackpad has cold solder
How to fix this PRB?
1. Flash your phone till you have no choice to take it to a tech..
2. Replace the trackpad
3. Qualified Technician must Reflow the system connector or the Chip
Water damage phones don't apply.. your screwed. sorry.. Corrosion is a cancer to phones. It always comes back... It's only a Temp fix..
I made a easy schematic of the trackpad connector pinouts..
SAY Thanks.... Ciao I hope it helps you...

I have exactly the same problem in a 1 month old Balckberry Curve 3G. Carrier: Movistar. I've been a Blackberry fun during 7 years but I'm thinking to switch to iPhone due to this annoying problem.

I have the curve 8520 and have had it for atleast 2 years. Nothing has ever gone wrong with, maybe just a bit of cosmetic damage. But yesterday my trackpad started spazing out. I rebooted my phone and I wasn't working at all. I would say that you might as well replace the trackpad. Will I will do as I'm waiting for it from eBay. But it annoyed me so much I went out and got the new Torch 9810.

Had this with my bb8520, tried everything, rebooting soft/hard/every which way - but found that after taking the battery out and pressing the shiny metal plate behind the sim card a few times, it's working again fine.....we'll see!! Must be a contact issue.....take note manufacturer/s!!

After pressing the metal plate you should follow these steps which will work like a charm.
Go to Options>Screen/Keyboard and set the trackpad horizontal & vertical sensitivity to 30.
