thanks....tried those earlier from the above links, but same result...i may go back to the verizon store and ask them to swap the USB cable.  wouldn't suspect any issue with vista recognizing the folders on there and it charging, but can't think of anything else

ugh, trying that, now getting "error opening installation log file.  Verify that the specific logfile location exists and is writable." just after selecting language during setup!

I would go with the clean unistall and the ver of desktop listed, It works.

I went through the uninstall process that was linked to this thread as well as the install process (I installed 4.2. SP1 since that's what my company provides).  While the device is getting charged, the connection manager says there is no device connected.  I can't even see the BB as a storage device. 

 

I'm about ready to chuck this thing and go back to my smart phone.

Please go to the main forum page and on the grey bar please open a new thread. This will give your problem more visibility and allow more user to help.
