Might be a problem with the SMS functionality on the BB. Call your carrier and get them to re-load it back on the system. Wipe the SMS service books and your carrier should be able to put them back on properly.

It actually happened to me with Rogers and my MMS capabilities. They just didn't have the phone configured properly and sent the wrong service book. I had them fix it and everything was good to go from there.

Try changing the themes to the one where you could use the SMS and MMS texts only, I had the same problem.
And if that doesnt work then try turning off your phone take out the battery for a minute or so then power it up again.

Still not having any luck with it, tried taking battery off and then restarting - going to speak to vodafone tomorrow, it is Sunday here - thanks everyone for tips, much appreciated -
