I actually got mine sorted today. After speaking to RIM on the phone, the problem is to do with Java. They got me to upgrade the OS from version 5 to version 6 through desktop manager. I have since reinstalled App World and it is now working fine for me.
Hopefully this will work for other people on here.

The fix works if you had OS5 installed and that is direct from RIM. I'm not sure about OS6, but if you give them a call on 01753 667000 and speak to their technical support, I'm sure that they will be able to help you out
