Unlock my Torch

I received the 'unlock code' from AT&T to unlock my BB 9810. I was told by their tech support that as soon as a new simm card is put in from the international carrier there will be a screen asking for the unlock code. My son is using this phone overseas and I would hate for this to be incorrect advice. Is there any way to check this procedure before he leaves the US?
