Updated Desktop Manager for 9700

Last week when I went to synch my device with the Desktop Mgr, a window appeared to ask if i wanted to update to the "new version"...I do , but it said i will need to "activate device to send & recieve emails"...how difficult a process is this and if i'm happy with the version that came with the 9700 originally, should I do the update.

I want all the new features, but if i have to jump through alot of "hoops" the get back to where i am now, i might pass.

I think my inexperience and lack of techy know how is obvious...

Thanks in advance and happy everything to everyone.

Joey

Re: Updated Desktop Manager for 9700

If everything is working well for you, I wouldn't push the envelope!

The upgrade process is quite easy...

Do a complete backup first in your Desktop Manager

First locate your carrier and the OS file you wish to use.
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp

1. Download the OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

Re: Updated Desktop Manager for 9700

ok...thanks. i'll probalbly not do anything, but I always want the "newest and coolest"...

The option automatically comes up when i go into DM...It has a window with a list of all the new upgrades and askes if i want to do it....then it has the notice about the "email activation" and i get nervous...will that happen automatically or do i have to call ATT?

thanks again.

If you are on a corporate BES account, you will likely need to get a new password for the activation from your BES admininistrator.

If you are on a persona BIS account, you do nothing.

Re: Updated Desktop Manager for 9700

Joey, I don't think you are reading what I have posted, I never mentioned to use Desktop Manager to upgrade the device, that is exactly what I don't recommend.

Scroll up to the precise instructions I posted.

Good luck.

Re: Updated Desktop Manager for 9700

Hi J.Sanders,

Sorry for my ignorance and I really appreciate your graciousness and the help.

I went to the sight you indicated, it directed me to a RIM sight, i downloaded the file (5.0.1.28) which seemes to be the new Desktop Mgr....is this what i was supposed to do?

Your Step # 2 delete file "vender xml"...where do i find that?

Again, I'm such a novice, is there a way to simplify this?

I'd be happy to pay for the help...like a paid tech support, if i could call or you call me and walk me through this.

Now i'm concerned about if i messed anything up by downloading what i did.

I realize this is a busy time, but let me know what makes sense to you, even if it's for me to leave you alone.

Thanks,

Joey

an addendum

If i just synch with the new version will everything be ok?

All I'm really concerned about is the data from Outlook move back & forth and that my email & SMS just remain in tact.

thanks again.

Re: an addendum

Hi!

JSanders is offline ATM...here's some information that might be helpful.

1) You've looked at the wrong place...the package you need to DL is the carrier udpate package for your BB...not the full DTM.

2) Here is a detailed procedure written by our very own Krypto that lays out all of the steps:

Hopefully that'll get you going.

No problems, you're welcome.

Nope. AT that site, download the 9700 OS from your carrier.

Scroll up to my instructions higher in this thread... very exact, follow them exactly as written. The vendor.xml will be right where I indicated in the earlier post AFTER you have downloaded your OS file AND installed it to your PC.
