I didn't think you had to update the desktop manager in order to update the device software.
You could download and install the software for your device from http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/dow
then when you open desktop manager, connect the blackberry and it will see that update for the install.
If you want to try to update the desktop manager, you could uninstall it from the computer, then install it using this link:

Which option from above did you try?

ok thanks. Try to uninstall the desktop manager and install it from the second link. I'm not sure whats causing the freeze. Are you on mac or PC?

You'll still be able to access the internet after you uninstall the desktop manager. After you uninstall the desktop manager, reboot your computer, download and install from http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
Do you access the internet through your blackberry using the desktop manager? If so, download the file first, then uninstall the desktop manager and install using the file you just saved.

oh I understand! that makes sense. I'm worried that if you uninstall it and the new install doesn't work for whatever reason, you will be stuck. If you take the phone to the store, they can update the software for you too. I'd hate for you not to have internet access because the desktop manager is acting up. You could also use bbsak to wipe and load the latest software for your phone.
Download and install bbsak / guide
Download and install the software for your device from (if you haven't done so already)
