Updating to OS 7.1 for the 9860

I currently have the 9860 and would like to specifically use the wifi hotspot. So far I have downloaded the BB Desktop tool. Grabbed the .exe from the web ( 9860_7.1.0.342.exe ) and have attempted to run. I have located and deleted the "Vendor.xml" file under CSmiley EmbarassedProg Files>Common Files>Research In Motion>AppLoader, and then launch the "Loader.exe". When launched, it goes through the Wizard, but I am unable to either ID the 7.1 update. Either I cannot locate the file to update, or the system does not recognize the phone needs to be updated. This is where I get stuck.

Hope I have included enough info to solicit help... not muddy the waters!

Re: Updating to OS 7.1 for the 9860

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

With 7.1, there may well be 2 copies of VENDOR.XML to remove...the other one will be here:

  • C:\Users\<your Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

Failing that, please provide the exact and complete error messages that it presents, including all punctuation. For instance, I cannot figure out exactly what this means:

So, please add more details.

You also can just use the Desktop Software...the simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):

1) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages

2) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed

3) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:

4) If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML (there will be at least one, perhaps 2)

5) Launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC. If, during the process, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.

Don't forget to backup.

PS -- there are newer versions beyond.342 available....523 is available from Redington...

Good luck!

I would also recommend you get this latest version.

http://www.blackberryos.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=1057

also, search your entire PC for any vendor.xml file

Otherwise you're doing everything right.

Do a backup of your device first, using Desktop Manager > Backup. Close Desktop Manager upon completion.

1. Download the OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

[ Edited ]

Ok, so I have followed those steps.

1) Cleared the previous versions.

2) Restarted Comp

3) Downloaded the latest version of 7.1

4) Deleted the Vendor.xml file

5) Connected to BB Desktop

6) Saved backup

7) Launched Loader.exe

Wizard goes through Device App Config

Pulls up Device App Selection (I see the various apps on my BB)

*** here is where I start to get confused. ***

I click "Next" and then it just goes to the Completion/Finish of the Wizard

At the "Finish" screen, when I clicked "Advanced" and selected "Delete all application data""

It then takes me to the next screen where it gives me an option to Automatically back up device application.

The 1st time I selected to have it back up, the 2nd time I chose for it not to.

"Next" and it takes me to the 'Finish Screen'

"Finish" it did update the software (took several minutes)

Once completed it asked for the Password, I put it in, and checked the Version, still read 7.0

Then after a few moments, it rebooted. Took awhile to get back up, but still reading 7.0

Pretty frustrated and lost at this point. Any further direction would be GREATLY appreciated!!

.... and now, when it reboots, takes several moments to come on and allow me to enter my password to activate the handset. Lots of data going back and forth on the server, and a little square box in top right corner, says "EN" and the touch screen is non responsive.

... after about 3-5 minutes it will come around and allow me to get into device. Still shows 7.0

I'm trying it one more time....

Re: Updating to OS 7.1 for the 9860

1. Did you do the second vendor.xml file deletion? Did you search for any others?
2. At thiwa point "Wizard goes through Device App Config" you agoiold are the update available screen. All the remainder you're doing is not part of the process.
3. Do you gave a valid BlackBerry data plan on your mobile provider account?
