Use of Blackberry Phone from US in Nigeria

I have been using my Blackberry Bold 9790 in the US for two months before visiting Nigeria. I have tried to connect to Blackberry using MTN Nigeria services but have been unsuccessful. The GSM service works fine (I can make and receive calls and also send SMS and receive), but I cannot get the Blackberry services. I have called MTN and they told me that everything is fine at their end and I should check the phone. Is there any problem using a phone bought in the US in Nigeria? The phone is not locked.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

 

Given your description, it is most likely that your US carrier has not released your BB PIN from their system so as to allow your BB to be registered on another carrier for data-level services. One BB PIN can be registered to only one carrier BIS system at any given moment...until your prior carrier releases it, your new carrier cannot create a BIS account for you.

 

But, as a test, I suggest (with a strong carrier network signal...not WiFi) the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):

1) Register HRT

  • KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
  • Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app

2) Resend Service Books

  • KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
  • Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.

3) Batt Pull Reboot

  • With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

 

Then again, since MTN said that all is fine, there might be some other problems...but I'd actually first recommend that you contact your US carrier to ensure they've released your PIN from their system.
