Using Rogers phone in the States on another data plan

I was travelling states side for a few days, and wanted to grab a t mobile (or other carrier) sim to pay by the day so i wouldn't be hit by astronomical data plan charges on Rogers.  I'm curious if i require one with a Blackberry Internet Service, or if a data plan is sufficient since i already pay for blackberry internet service through rogers...

Any thoughts?

Re: Using Rogers phone in the States on another data plan

Once you change the SIM card, you are no longer connected to Rogers (the Rogers SIM is a vital link in your BlackBerry knowing it has the BIS data plan).

So, with a Tmobile or ATT SIM in the device, you will not be connected to your Rogers BIS data plan, you will get phone and SMS service only (and can connect to WiFi for internet browsing, etc.).

There is always the chance, that for some short period of time, you might still see email activity after the SIM sway, especially while connect via WiFi, but it won't last for long and may be happen at all.

Oh, and your 9700 will have to be unlocked from Rogers. See the link below, the guide to unlocking.

Re: Using Rogers phone in the States on another data plan

Thanks for the reply.

Actually I have a 9810 now, so i'll need to update my profile on this forum...

One other question then, if i paid for the tmobile BIS plan, would i then have full access to my blackberry apps?

Re: Using Rogers phone in the States on another data plan

Yea, but.

Tmobile doesn't sell a data plan on pre-paid SIM cards... only on contract.

Re: Using Rogers phone in the States on another data plan

Oh, and Tmobile's 3G and 4G network are different bands than that of Rogers.

You will get only the slower EDGE data speeds.

ATT's 3G network bands matches that of Rogers. But I don't think they have short term data plans either. Not good.

Re: Using Rogers phone in the States on another data plan

You're welcome... probably not the 'easy' answers you wanted to hear, but nonetheless.

Good luck.
