Verizonwireless Data plan

Why do I have to order a data package if I will only use the phone for text messages and phone calls.  My wife likes the look of the curve and don't need and data plans but they won't sell us a phone with out a data lan.  Can't the data feature be turned off on all smartphones?

Re: Verizonwireless Data plan

You will need to complain to Verizon as that is their policy, not RIM's.

Why do they require it? I would think it has to do with $$s, don't you?

Re: Verizonwireless Data plan

Thanks for your response, i am not complaining here I am just trying to find out why I can't use the phone without the data plan.  Is there a way to turn off the data network on the phone?

Re: Verizonwireless Data plan

uhhhh, no. Verizon wants to be the good guy.

ATT, Tmobile and most all other carrier will allow you to have a BB withOUT a data plan.

Who do you think is telling the truth?

Re: Verizonwireless Data plan

ATT required my father to add the package to his phone so we could purchase it but then we removed it as my dad doesn't use the data services. Can you possible do this with Verizon? Can you sign up for the data, get the phone and then cancel the data?

Re: Verizonwireless Data plan

No, Verizon does not allow you to remove the data plan if you have a BB device, I would have suggested that.

Re: Verizonwireless Data plan

In regards to the VZW Data plan;

The reason it is mandatory through VZW is because the phone is constantly sending and receiving data connections to the VZW network as well as the BB network.  With that, if there was not a data plan available to it, then there would be astronomical overages in every single customers bill that uses a BB.  Unfortunately, it is one of those things where it is what it is.  There is a way to make it so you do not have to pay for the data feature, however, it does not allow you to use the phone.  So, it's one of those things ... Dollars.
