WI-FI, Mobile Network and BIS

I have a new Torch 9800, on the Bell network in Canada. I'm connected to a Corporate BES server.

I initially had considerable trouble getting the Torch to connect to Wi-FI until I found a post that said the Torch doesn't always support Wireless N. When I switched my home router to Wireless b/g I was able to consistently connect and get an IP address. (already I'm making concesions for the Torch, now my laptop doesn't have access to a wirelss N network)

The current problem is related to the ability for BIS to switch from the Wi-FI network to Mobile when I'm out of Wi-Fi range and then back to Wi-Fi when I return home.

Often the Torch will "stick" on BIS - Mobile and even though I have a WI-FI connection (with IP address) it won't switch back to Wi-Fi.

I've used many other devices in my home including an iPhone, and HTC phone and they can all switch seamlessly.

Why does RIM have to make this network switching so complicated and not very reliable. I've done a bunch of Google searches and there are numerous complaints about how the Torch handles Wi-FI.

I've called my corporate support, and my carrier's support and they claim they contacted RIM but they all point fingers at each other  and ultimately me... must be your router. NO The router works fine with multiple Wi-FI devices, it's only the Torch that doesn't work.

WHEN IS RIM GOING TO MAKE IT WORK?

Well, they may already have.

But you left out one key detail.

What is your Operating System loaded to your device? Look at Options > About, third line down beginning with a "v.6.0.x.xxx", What is yours?

Do a backup of your device first, using Desktop Manager > Backup. Close Desktop Manager upon completion.

1. Download the OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

Re: WI-FI, Mobile Network and BIS

I'll have to confirm that Bell and my Corporate IT folks will support that OS Upgrade.

Re: WI-FI, Mobile Network and BIS

I finally got around to doing the OS upgrade. Followed the procedure and ... no success.

While at home my Torch connects to the Wi-Fi but the BIS is still set to Mobile Network and I can't browse.

When I shut off the Wi-Fi, I can Browse through the Mobile connect.

Like I said before, maybe someday RIM will make the seamless switch to available Wi-Fi actually work.
