Wireless email & browsing - not BES

I have searched for answers but failed miserably!

Im with Orange UK and wish to minimise my bandwidth usage due to cost.

Can someone plese explain how I do the folowing please:

- When I find a free wifi spot, how do I ensure wifi is used to connect rather than my data connection?

- How do I turn off email updates (not the right phrase I know) unless I'm wifi connected?

- Where do I find a comprehensive manual for this FAB piece of kit?

- Is the software update referred to in the stickies available to UK users yet?

Thanks

Re: Wireless email & browsing - not BES

1. If you are connected via WiFi, your BlackBerry data will always prefer the WiFi connection rather than the mobile signal. You can ensure that, if you want, by going to your Manage Connection screen and turning off the connection to your mobile service provider.

2. Not easily. You can go to your BIS account login and click the box "do not foward messages to device" and turn that back on afterwards. Personally, your email being pushed to your device does not require great data unless you actually open and read the email. RIM pushes only the first 2KB chuck of data for an email, and only until open and begin reading the email is the next 2KB pushed to your device.

3. Here are a couple good links for you:

4. Device operating system releases are "released" by specific carriers once they have certified and trained their support techs, but still, you are able to load to any carrier's same model by following the instructions below.

First locate your carrier or any carrier and the OS file you wish to use.
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp

Do a backup of your device first, using Desktop Manager > Backup. Close Desktop Manager upon completion.

1. Download the OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.
