Can someone help with resolving the issue with my phone. I cannot hear when in normal mode, but speakerphone and external headset mode works fine. I have a blackberry pearl and looking if can be resolved with some easy steps instead of having to purchase another phone.

Hi and welcome to the forums!
Try the volume buttons on the right side (as you face the device).
Look for the volume indicator while on the call and make sure it is all the way up
Press the green key, then press menu, select general options. Scroll down to
default call volume and make sure it's set at 100%. You can also enhance the call
audio by boosting the treble or bass. I have attached a screen shot of the volume
The volume indicator is far right indicator \/

Welcme to the Frums!
In addition to what Bifocals said, Try removing your battery. Replace after 30 seconds - allowing your phone to reboot.

If you did all the suggestions including the battery pull, take the phone to the carrier.
You should have a 1 year warranty against manufacturer defects.

Try these solutions in order.
Solution 1 - Reload the OS
Solution 2 - take it to your carrier for a replacement under warranty or out of warranty - or goto a Store and buy a new phone - your choice.

I have had this issue and to fix it you need to make a call and while on speakerphone plug in your headset and then unplug it. For some reason it now works where you can hear the person without having to use either the headset or the speakerphone!
