data package for theses phones

Iwas considering buying. I was told by 3 verizon cs personel I don,t need it then I was told by another cs rep and a retail store clerk I had to get it I only want the text and picture messaging. how can I get pass the data package. Don,t want don,t need. Why is it neccessary to get the data package with your cellphone carrier

unfortunately with verizon at least, you HAVE to get the $30 data package if you get a BB. at least its cheaper than the windows OS phones! i didnt care to have the internet, but i wanted email access and some the features that only came on this phone.
