email address cache quick list problem

In the lastest device OS, the email application on the device caches email addresses from emails you have received, so that when you compose a new message these cached email addresses appear in the quick list along with addresses from your Contacts list.  I need to know how to turn off this feature or to at least delete some of the cached addresses.  Here's the problem.

I have a contact in my Contacts list whose name is Thomas.  He often goes by Tom, but I don't have Tom in the Contact record for him.  He sent me a conference call invitation in which he used the name Tom to set up the conference.  The actual email address is from freeconference.com, but his name appears as Tom.  Now if I go to write an email to him and start to type Tom, the cached email appears and I end up sending an email to freeconference.com instead of to his real email address.  I'm sure this happens with other contacts as well.  Since the real email address is masked in the quick pick list, it is very easy to miss this issue and send to the wrong place.

Help appreciated.

Re: email address cache quick list problem

Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Support Forums.

It is always helpful to receive help, to include your exact BlackBerry device model # and carrier name, so that when you have a question, that information won't need to be asked up front. Also, stating your device Operating System version is normally another common question, found on your BlackBerry at Options > About, third line down, looks like "v4.x.x.xxx"

You might also mention your previous OS version.

And whether you are on a personal BIS or corporate BES account.

Re: email address cache quick list problem

Good point.  See requested info below.  Does that help you answer the question?

Verizon Wireless

Blackberry 9630

v. 5.0.0.591 (Bundle 1002, Platform 4.2.0.272)

This is a corporate account, but using BIS not BES (email is hosted by Google Apps)

Re: email address cache quick list problem

If you happen to reboot your device, i.e., With the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot, does the cached email address still appear?

Re: email address cache quick list problem

I would very much like to know how to stop this as well as it is extremely annoying and very poor design.  If RIM put this on here, there really needs to be a way to shut it off.

So, how do you turn this "feature off".

Re: email address cache quick list problem

i think this will solve your problem

Go to Mailbox > Options > General Options > "Show recent contacts when composing e-mail" set to "NO."

Re: email address cache quick list problem

Thanks raydha!!! This was it... fixed my issue.

On the Blackberry Torch, the feature was located here:

  • From the Email list, click Menu
  • Click Options
  • Click "Message Display and Actions"
  • Uncheck "Show Recent Contacts When Composing Email"
