OK - I've managed to make it work, using the following approach:

  1. Uninstall the existing program if you have it installed (you have to do this via the Control Panel as there is no 'uninstall' command on the menu
  2. I kept my desktop software settings, but I'm not sure how much benefit I got from that as I had to reconfigure everything again anyway
  3. Restart your computer to clean it up
  4. Go to the Blackberry website and find the Desktop software download
  5. Run the program then consent for the C++ bit to be installed
  6. Re-configure to your preferred settings and you should be good to go

RIM could do so much better in this regard.
