Hi Metroberry: I do not know if I am doing it right, asking questions on this thread. If no I would like to know how to do it!
I am interested in making this Serial to USB cable to install the old software on my 7230. Do you have an schematic, that shows pin connections? What pin goes with the serial DB9 and with the female USB.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Before you even begin to look at this scenario, do you even have the Old software?
Chances are that when you rollback the software it wont be able to keep the database on the BB and so it will wipe it anyway. (App software is HIGHLY unlikely to be backwards compatible).
The device is designed to be secure. if you dont know the password then it is designed NOT to be able to be hacked, which is EXACTLY what you are doing.
Since we cannot confirm the identity of the owner of a BB of anyone posting on this forum, I would not be giving anyone any ideas on how to hack any BB device.
For all you know you could be allowing someone to break into a BB and access privileged corporate information and making yourself liable to prosecution under numerous laws. You are running into a legal Minefield here!

OzBerry: I do not blame you for thinking that everybody asking for advice is a crook, trying to hack something for free.
This is not my case. This Blackberry was neither stolen or purchased from somebody else. It happens to be my daugther's Blackberry, and the password she gave me it is not working. That is the reason why,I would like to follow Metroberry's advice, and install the 3.9 Blackberry software, using the serial cable approach, since as you and Metroberry says, you can not install that software with the 7230 USB cable.
Anyhow, Ozberry, do not be so paranoid, thinking there is a conspiracy everywhere. Chill out! and you will live much better.

Sorry, but you didnt answer the original question.
Do you actually have a copy of the 3.9 BB OS software for your model handset?
It might be available on the BB website so if you dont have it then soldering together a DB9-> USB connector isnt going to be of benefit... Make sure you get the software first...
Personally I dont believe this will work for you so dont get your hopes up that it will fix things.
Really you ARE trying to hack into the device (trying to break a password encryption on a secure device) so I dont hold much hope that you will be able to do this...
And, I am just trying to help others protect themselves by advising them to not expose themselves to litigation.......
No conspiracy involved...

OzBerry: I have downloaded the 3.9 software from the BB site. I am ready to make the Serial USB cable to give it a try.
I have nothing to loose.
Thank you for your assistance! I still need the schematic to make the cable.

hi. im really new to the blackberry scene and i have the same problem with the rest of you guys. my girlfriend reset the password in my phone after we had a fight and would not tell me the new password.. i badly need the phone now and i want to be able to unlock the password without wiping out the data... i have a bb8700 from tmobile. i have already downloaded the version 3.5a of desktop manager and am wondering if we were able to resolve the issue of bypassing
the password request using a r232-usb connector... any news on this would be highly appreciated... thanks....

I also forgot the password and is afraid of loosing all my data and about 967 contacts on my phone .. Now the question is as you said earlier that "how would it feel if someone finds your phone from a roadside and gets all the information from your phone" .. Why you people sell your product to the people you don't know .. Why don't you people change your policy and sell your device ONLY n ONLY to the people you know .. I'm in a real deep trouble after I forgot my password as all my business contacts are in the device .. Tell me whats the solution .. Hey don't worry about any legislative issues .. I can give you any UNDERTAKING if required by you .. But Please tell me how to unlock the device

I have just encountered similar password error problem trying to hook up my BB Bold 9700 device to the Laptop for the first time. It certainly was not a case of forgotten password as password has been in use for long and same for my other mobile phones. The BB has never reported this error prior to the PC hook up attempt.. I am currently on 9/10 password attempt and stopped unsure of next steps to avert data clean out.
This is most certainly an OS problem to which someone from the OS community should profer workable solution to ease user distress. Would solution be found using the installation CD provided with the device?
Help someone before I loose it all!
