I have a BB 8700 and much to my embarrassment have not backed it up since I lost my PC contents to a bad virus. I failed to download the desktop software and have no backup files whatsoever.
I downloaded your current PC desktop software with my 8700 connected to the PC (it was charging). The install seemed to go quite well until the software asked for for my password. I tried the PW for the phone; no joy. I tried several other passwords I might have used; no joy.
It appears someone in RIM will have to reset my password in your database and give me a temporary PW so I can login and then create a new permanent PW.
What are my next steps?

Sorry to hear you're having an issue entering your password.
Unless you are using a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server , the password can only be changed by first entering the correct password or by wiping the BlackBerry® smartphone.
This KB article should help you with your password. "BlackBerry Desktop Manager or the BlackBerry smartphone does not accept the correct BlackBerry smartphone password" http://bbry.lv/KOgktf
