Nope...to use email via the native Messages client, you must have an adequate BIS data plan from your carrier. The native method for email does not use a full on-device email client...rather, it uses servers hosted at the carriers/BlackBerry as an interface between the BB and your email server. Hence, it costs extra to use those proprietary services.
Depending on other circumstances, you might be able to use WebMail via the Browser, or you might need to install a 3rd party Browser (e.g. Opera).
