messenger only works on 3G?

So last weekend was the first chance I had to travel with my 9800 Torch. Driving from Minneapolis, MN to Madison, WI I rarely saw the 3G network. It bounced between EDGE and edge networks and it seems that Messenger only worked on the 3G network.

First, what is the difference between AT&T's EDGE network and 3G network?

And is there any reason why Messenger won't work on the EDGE network with a 9800 Torch running

I've never had this problem with my Storm running Messenger on the EDGE network.

If you are seeing your BlackBerry bounce back and forth between EDGE and edge, it likely means your signal strength is not optimal.  When on EDGE, go into Options>Device>Device and Status Information and see what the signal strength is showing.  Optimal signal strength is between -40dBm and -90dBm and there is no guarantee the data will work below -90.
