question about accessing internet directly by WIFI

[ Edited ]

HI, all,

I'm a new user of Blackberry, I'm currently using 8900.

My previous one is a windows mobile phone .

Because I'm a college a student, my school is widely covered WIFI.

After I start using 8900, I figure out almost all the internet appllication is limited to the BIS OR BES.

I'm not sure if this is right or not.

But I have tried several programs, like IM app, Gmail app.

This is very messing me up , because WMM is not limited to connect either wifi or wap by carrier.

Is there any solution for this?  I do some research, there is a solution that change the TCP setting, but it was a very old post.

Thanks for the help

Re: question about accessing internet directly by WIFI

You need BlackBerry data plan for accessing the apps you mentioned above. Blackberry data plan is different than you Internet plan.

Please confirm whether you're following below steps for Wi-Fi -

Step # 1

1.      Turn on Wi-Fi

2.      click Set Up Wi-Fi Network

3.     Next

4.     Scan for Networks

5.      select the available network

6.      If the authentication is required then you'll be prompted to enter the (WEP) Key as provided by hotel/airport/hotspot authority

7.     Connect

Step # 2

1.     Options

2.     Advanced Options

3.     Browser

4.      Default Browser Configuration: Hotspot Browser

yes, I know this .

But thanks for your reply.

I'm still thinking if I should return this or not.

Blackberry is very limited for me

And the build quality is not that good at all

Re: question about accessing internet directly by WIFI

I think I may have the same issue - if not, my sincere apologies for posting here.

When accessing the world wide web through my Blackberry and WI-FI (a wireless network, not my phone network) the connection to the web goes through a Blackberry owned proxy server (ip address 93.186.20.127), which is very unnerving! How does one connect directly, without going via Research In Motion UK Limited that is blackberry.net ??

Seems to be the same proxy connection when I connect through my EDGE telephone provider, also. As I'm with O2 there is no point asking them!

Re: question about accessing internet directly by WIFI

The only way to avoid the Blackberry network is to go with a Windows device.

Regardless of the fact that you're using WiFI or your carrier's wireless network, on a Blackberry device, you will ALWAYS be connecting via the Blackberry network.

Re: question about accessing internet directly by WIFI

Thank you for the information. I wish this had been clearly explained by the O2 shop staff BEFORE I committed to a Blackberry.
